Discovering Fourni Korseon island

Fourni together with Thymaina and about 20 other small islands belong to an island complex with Fourni as its capital. They have probably been inhabited since the Archaic and Classical times. From the ruins that have been preserved scattered on the island we know that it was definitely inhabited during the Hellenistic and Roman eras. During Byzantium and the Medieval period, the natural coves of the cluster of islands made the area suitable for raids protected from the strong winds of the Aegean and consequently it was a den of pirates.

It is a forgotten paradise on the edge of the Aegean and is suitable for those who want to escape from the intense rhythm of the city. Ideal for excursions to the beaches that exist on the island but also for exploring the islands of the complex by boat. The inhabitants are very nice, gentle and are mainly engaged in fishing and seafaring.

What to see in Fourni:

The town of the island is located in the port. It has small traditional cobblestone streets and houses with courtyards full of flowers. In its central cobbled street, you will find many shops with souvenirs and traditional products such as thyme honey for which they are famous, traditional sweets and cheese products. In the port there are many taverns with very good food. Of course, you have to get fish or lobsters that are fresh! Also try braised goat in tomato sauce and local cheeses! All around the island you will see churches and small chapels. They are always freshly painted white and clean no matter how small they are. Also scattered on the island you will find various archaeological findings that testify that the island has its roots deep in time. On the hill of Ai-Georgis there are still parts of the walls of the Acropolis. In the courtyard of St. Taxiarchi there are ancient columns and, in the country, you will find an elaborate Roman sarcophagus. A must visit place is Petrokopio. There, is the Ancient Quarry of the island. Below is a wonderful beach. Ships used to come there in ancient times and load the marble to take it to its destination. The beach is isolated, has pebbles and is not organized. You must have with you water and possibly some snacks. Kambi is an ideal choice for swimming since it is a sheltered cove from the wind. There you will also see 4 windmills and there is a canteen and some taverns.   Close to Kambi is the beautiful settlement of Chrysomilia, a balcony overlooking the Ikarian Sea. There you can also swim or eat. In both of these areas there are some rooms to let. An organized beach with a beach bar ideal for families with children is Psili Ammos. Fourni belongs to the Natura 2000 areas as it is a refuge for peregrine falcons, monachus monachus seals and dolphins. They may not have many trees in the island, but various plants grow in the area, such as thyme, mandrake, sage, etc.

Thymaina, another habitable island of Fourni has many beaches accessible by foot or boat, restaurants and cafes and some rooms for rent. It is a small and welcoming society that still remains authentic and unscathed by the huge waves of tourists that flood other parts of the country.
